What Makes an Influencer Effective?

As an influencer, you want to be sure that you’re engaging your audience and using the strategies needed to expand your reach and become more effective. You want your following to grow, and you want more brands to choose to sponsor you.

Are you an effective influencer? Do you want to expand your brand and increase your reach? Make sure you’re using these key strategies.

1. Choose Your Niche with Care

In order to be an effective influencer, you need to have a niche: a specific, specialized segment of the market that you want to reach. Some influencers focus on their status as “mommy bloggers.” They have small children, often several of them, and want to show how they use a variety of products to make their lives easier or to enhance their children’s overall health. Others want to focus on an athletic market, often a specific corner of it: they want to show how specific athletic products and options help improve their performance and help them reach their goals.

In choosing your niche, look for something you’re passionate about: something you have a genuine interest in and can continue to focus on over time. Your niche may shift, but a dramatic change could cause you to lose followers in the future–so make sure you choose right from the start!

2. Get to Know Your Target Audience

Being an influencer is all about your audience. If you don’t have a broad following, chances are, you don’t have enough power within your niche to actually reach out to people or brands. In order to become more effective, really get to know your target audience. You may want to ask questions like:

  • Who are they? What sets your target audience apart from the crowd? Remember, you want to be as specific as possible so that you can get a better idea of exactly who you’re trying to reach and what they need from you.
  • What platforms do they use? It doesn’t do you any good to create a stunning Facebook profile and a constant stream of new Facebook posts if most of the members of your target audience are more likely to use Instagram.
  • What type of content do they like? In some cases, finding the right type of content may be trial and error. However, by getting to know your target audience, you get a better idea of where to start creating content. Do they prefer text posts? Video? Images?

The better you know your target audience, the more you can tailor your content, the brands you choose to represent, and the products you choose to feature directly to them. At Reach.Dog, we can help provide the tools needed to evaluate your target audience and get to know them–and as a result, you’ll find that you’re better able to create material designed just for them.

3. Create High-Quality Content

Your content is ultimately what will help you stand out as an influencer. If you create boring content that your target audience has little interest in, it won’t be long before they start to drift away or choose to focus on other influencers and brands. On the other hand, if you create stunning content that is genuinely engaging to your users, answers the problems they have, and gives them a reason to keep coming back for more, you’ll notice a significant increase in overall viewership and even the number of users who follow you and engage with what you have to offer.

Creating high-quality content also means carefully considering the brands you want to partner with. You may not want to accept every partnership that comes along. If a brand doesn’t fit your image or doesn’t line up with the needs of your target audience, it may do you little good to partner with them–and, in fact, it may actually cause you to lose some of your followers. Keep in mind that the needs of your followers may be different from yours, too. While it’s fine to select the content you share based on your interests and preferences, you should always filter it through the lens of what your followers need.

4. Post Regularly

If you want to keep people coming back for more, it’s critical that you have a posting schedule that they can rely on. If you simply throw out random content when the mood moves you, posting several times in one week and then not at all for several more, your followers are less likely to engage with your brand–or with the brands you choose to partner with. They may not even notice when you go back to posting content.

Test your audience to see what content frequency they respond to best. Some audiences prefer to see daily content, while others are more content when you post only a couple of times a week. If you notice your engagement rates dropping, you may find that changing your posting schedule makes a big difference.

5. Interact

In the age of social media, it’s not enough to simply post your content and walk away. Instead, find ways to interact regularly with your target audience. Answer their questions. Respond to their comments. Answer emails and private messages, when possible. Consider going live to engage with your followers while you post your content.

As you engage with your followers, you become a more integral part of their lives. They won’t just view you through the lens of your posts. Instead, they’ll get a better feel for exactly who you are and why they should trust you–and as a result, they’ll be more likely to trust the brand recommendations you make.

6. Seek Out Brands You’re Interested in Partnering With

As your reach grows, so do your opportunities. You may find that with a large following, you’re better positioned to partner with bigger-name brands. Seek out the brands you’re interested in partnering with and gauge their interest. Some may not be interested now, but may reach out with a partnership offer later. Others may be eager to partner with you. Reach out to those brands to see if they’re interested in working with an influencer.

Make sure you have a solid concept of what you can bring to the partnership and why they should consider partnering with you, specifically. Be ready to share your specific target audience, your ideas for the brand, and your following. At Reach.Dog, we help connect influencers with the brands that are most likely to need their services.
