Title: "Saint Benedict." St. Benedict of Nursia, Italy, a brilliant student, hermit and monk, founded twelve communities for monks. His main achievement is the "Rule of Benedict," rules for monks to follow, written with a spirit of balance, moderation and reason. Most Christian religious communities founded in the Middle Ages adopted the Rule. Each day, monks devoted eight hours to prayer, eight hours to sleep and eight hours to manual work, sacred reading or works of charity. St. Benedict is regarded as the founder of Western monasticism. St. Benedict had a deep devotion to the Cross. He was miraculously delivered from poisoning by jealous monks twice in his life.  St. Benedict is the patron saint of Europe, monks, civil engineers, and against kidney disease. "May the Holy Cross be my light! May the dragon never be my guide." - St. Benedict's constant prayer of exorcism, protecting us from the evil of Satan. Artist: Lynn Garlick,  Taos, New Mexico.
