In the 1970s, while Major League Baseball played it safe, Portland went rogue. The Mavericks were an independent ball team rostered with Hollywood stuntmen, washed-up pitchers, oddballs, dreamers, and a dog. Founded by Bing Russell (Kurt’s dad, yes really), they were the only independent, unaffiliated, and proudly unhinged team in the minors. No corporate sponsors. No MLB oversight. Just cheap beer, wild comebacks, and glorious chaos. They hired the first female GM, let anyone try out, and packed the stadium with fans who just wanted fun, not focus groups. The dugout smelled like bubblegum, bourbon, and rebellion. They pissed off the league, broke attendance records, and proved you don’t need a billion-dollar budget to play your heart out.
