A fob is an adornment or a seal that hangs from the ribbon or chain of a pocket watch. Its purpose is to decorate or add weight to the watch chain itself making it easier for the watch to be withdrawn from a pocket. The fob would have been used to seal the wax of a letter or note.   A wonderful and unusual family crest fob from the Victorian (ca1880) era! This fantastic piece is made of sterling silver and features an ornate seal at the base. The fob is comprised of a decorative double-sided topper, which serves as a handle for the piece. Both sides have a detailed figural design featuring two cherub faces at the top and bottom. Swirled detail and curved wings complete the ornate design, framing an open space in the center. The seal bears the image of a detailed family crest, featuring a large shield in the center with several symbols and feathered leaves at either side.
