This African Hippo (Hippopotamus) sculpture is handcrafted by the Shona artisans in Zimbabwe. Hippos are part of the “Big Five” animals in Africa. Hippos live in sub-Saharan Africa in areas with abundant water, as they spend most of their time submerged to keep their skin cool and moist. The hippopotamus an aquatic mammal that cannot swim, a vegetarian that is also the most dangerous animal in Africa. This art form is known as Shona sculpture because it is hand-carved by the Shona people of Zimbabwe.
