The Shiprock landform, located in northwestern New Mexico, is the remnant of an explosive volcanic eruption that occurred around 30 million years ago. The main part of the landform is nearly 2,000 ft high, and 1,700 ft in diameter. Over millions of years, the volcano eroded away leaving behind the hardened lava rock formation. Another name for these formations is a "volcano plug".
