This is demonstrated again by the newest 1/400 scale item – the Space Shuttle Atlantis mounted on a massive Crawler-Transporter. The idea behind this enormous vehicle was to transfer space rockets and Space Shuttles from NASA’s Vehicle Assembly Building to the launch complex at the Kennedy Space Center, a distance of some 5.6km. Two such vehicles were produced, and they were the world’s largest tracked vehicles when built. The Crawler-Transporter measures 40m long, 35m wide and 7.9m high. Its weight comes in at a staggering 2,721 tonnes! Built by Marion Power Shovel, the Crawler-Transporter ran on eight sets of tracks, two on each corner.
