The artist of this beautiful piece is fellow adoptee, Shirley MacKenzie. History: The painting that inspired this graphic (produced in 2008) is titled Missing Pieces. It is one of eighteen paintings that Shirley produced, outlining the behemoth task of going against family and society to uncover very personal and often uncomfortable truths. The truths that allow adoptees to process their own grief through their discoveries. While we become both warrior and detective to our own absence, the greatest discovery is in finding that we were the missing piece. If there was one thing that Shirley would want to relay to the general public, it's this. THIS should never happen to anyone. No one should ever be erased from their own story.
