Surprise! A color photograph by Alan Ross. I have made a lot of color photographs in my day, and back in the early to mid-80s, I toyed with adding some color images to my portfolio and offering them for sale. I made the prints myself, but because I loved the extended tonal range of working with color negative film rather than transparency, the  "Type C" prints I was making didn't hold up well in terms of color permanence. I gave up working with color. Fast forward to the digital age. In the early 90s, I started working with Photoshop. By the early 2000s, I had a small pocket digital camera and started having some digital fun. Then I got a better printer and a better scanner and started making prints, but only for home and family. We visited our daughter for my recent 75th birthday. On her wall was a print of this image I had made for her years ago and which I had completely forgotten about. I loved the simplicity of the scene and now seemed a perfect time to share a bit of Ross color a
