Lions used to roam large swathes of Africa, as well as parts of Asia and Europe. But now lions have disappeared from over 90% of their historic range. There are 2 formally recognized subspecies: the African Lion is found only in Africa south of the Sahara desert; the Asiatic Lion exists in one small population in western India. The future of lions are uncertain. There are thought to be as few as 23,000 lions left in the wild today. WCN states that “As a keystone species and apex predator, lions are crucial to the habitats they occupy. Without lions, disease spread is likely across species, and vast savanna grassland ecosystems would disintegrate into dysfunctional, barren landscapes impacting all life within.”
