From invention in Scandinavia to its inception as a form of winter recreation in the United States, Norwegians gave definitive shape to the sport of skiing in North America. During the early 1900’s, Norwegian immigrants of Ishpeming Michigan introduced, as it was then called, skisport to their community. First formed as the Norden Ski Club in 1887, this group of passionate alpinists adopted the namesake of their hometown and changed the name of this nascent alpine sporting body the Ishpeming Ski Club which thereafter then gave official birth to the National Ski Association in 1905.
