Pleiospilos nelii (split rock) is a mimicry plant favorite native to South Africa. Extremely succulent pair of grayish-green leaves form a clefted egg-shaped body known as a bi-lobe. Leaves are dotted with myriad tiny dots that are in fact stomates (pores in the epidermis). Can grow quite large to 4" in diameter. In winter to spring, and possibly late summer to fall as well, silky golden-apricot flowers with white centers emerge. The genus Pleiospilos is part of the family Aizoaceae, which includes the various forms of plants known as ice plants and those known as mimicry plants. Excellent in a small windowsill pot or with other mimicry plants that have similar ecological needs.
