These coins were minted almost 800 years ago (1271-1295) during the reign of Archduke Meinhard II who ruled over the Duchy of Carinthia in now modern Southern Germany and Austria. The Duchy of Carinthia was one of many Duchies that, united, composed one of the most famous and powerful Empires to have ever ruled in Europe - the Holy Roman Empire. Archduke Meinhard II, under whose rule these coins were minted, held the title of ‘Prince of the Holy Roman Empire’ granted to him by King Rudolf I - Monarch of the House of Habsburg who ruled over all duchies in the Holy Roman Empire.  On the obverse of this coin is a large ‘cross potent’ overlaid with a smaller cross potent; around it, reads the inscrip
