These coins were minted almost 800 years ago (1271-1295) during the reign of Archduke Meinhard II who ruled over the Duchy of Carinthia in now modern Southern Germany and Austria. The Duchy of Carinthia was one of many Duchies that, united, composed one of the most famous and powerful Empires to have ever ruled in Europe - the Holy Roman Empire.
