One of the eight primordial Egyptian deities was Amun, the god of the air. Amun's role evolved over time; during the Middle Kingdom, he was the King of the Deities, and during the New Kingdom, he was a nationally worshiped god. Amun-Ra was formed when he merged with Ra, the ancient sun god. It is believed that Amun created himself and then everything else in the universe, but then separated himself from it as "the original inscrutable and indivisible creator." When Amun and Ra united, he became both a visible and invisible deity, appealing to the ancient Egyptian concept of Ma'at, or balance. Amun has been represented as a goose, snake, or ram, as well as a man with the head of a ram, frog, royal cobra, crocodile, or ape.
