Turn Four
It is easy to believe that painting as a visual art has limits to what it can do. How do you depict motion? How do you depict emotion? Finding ways to communicate these things with paint is one of the greatest challenges an artist can face, and for centuries, we have been challenging ourselves to break the barriers of what the viewer can feel. Whenever I make an attempt to tell the impossible, I am met every time with varying parts: joy, surprise, and defeat. This was the last painting I made in this series, and I thought for a long time about how I could get the viewer to understand how fast these riders are going. It wasn't technique or detail in the end that got me there. It was confidence and feeling that made this art become an accurate representation of what I had seen.
