Villa Sciarra Bridge

Villa Sciarra, a small park outside the center of Rome in Monteverde, peacefully populated by locals away from the chaos and tourism in the city's heart. I enjoy making the journey here to paint in peace. Outside the park entrance, this bridge stood overgrown by plants and weathered over time. It was part of the inner walls that protected the people of Rome centuries ago. Passage through/under this bridge was prohibited when I painted this, due to a large crack (seen in the painting) putting it in jeopardy of collapsing. Like many things in Rome, time and the elements are catching up, there is this fleeting feeling and mournful anticipation that the ancient beauty of this city is and will slowly return to earth.
