This is the Medal  of the Immaculate Conception also known as the Miraculous Medal. It’s the only medal that the Virgin herself gave a model of, in a vision, to  Saint Catherine Laboure around 1830 in France. The Virgin said to Catherine " Have a medal struck upon this model. Those who wear it will receive great graces, especially if they wear it around the neck. The graces will be abundant for those who wear it with confidence." The front bears a prayer around the medal ; the rays projecting from Mary's hands symbolize the graces shed upon those asking for them. Mary standing on the globe crushing a serpent beneath her feet symbolizes her Assumption into Heaven. The back has twelve stars symbolizing the Twelve Apostles who form the Church. The M stands for Mary, the Mediatrix who presents our prayers to her son to seek His graces, The Cross and Bar symbolizes Christ suffering on the cross and redemption.
