LeConte Stewart (American, 1891–1990)Farmhouse in AutumnPastel on paper9 x 11 ½ in. This work captures Stewart’s interest in the quiet dignity of Utah’s rural structures. The weathered white farmhouse, accented with red brick and outbuildings, stands amid bare trees and fading autumn fields. Stewart often used pastel to quickly record light and atmosphere, producing studies with immediacy and intimacy. A native of Glenwood, Utah, Stewart studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts before returning west to become one of Utah’s foremost painters. Known equally for his rural landscapes and depictions of small-town architecture, he spent much of his career balancing his work as a prolific artist with his role as head of the University of Utah’s art department.
