Antique c.1910 English Portrait Miniature, Woman with Guitar, 3/4 Pose, 24k Gold Plated 5" Frame
Almost Impressionist, at least with the hints of that movement, this is a delightful 3/4 pose, watercolor portrait miniature done on thick art paper. She dates to about 1910, and is posed casually with a lovely old chair and a guitar in view, hinting at her leisure pursuits. She is not identified, but the heavily gold-plated oval frame with velvet easel back tells us the frame came from Moseley, England, early 1900s, and the frame is heavily plated in 22k gold, very nicely preserved. Moseley, England embossment on the frame, was a frame maker company of fine quality frames up 'til the 1940s. Maker, we think, would be: "Messrs Matthias Watts, an Art Dealer and framer who had a shop at 15-17 St Mary’s Row, a little to the left of the Bull’s Head." (internet quote). Very good to excellent condition for age and type. The painting wants to slip slightly downward into the aperture, and might need to be braced with a tiny tape tab in order to hold her in the oval a little better. I'll leave
