Fine Antique French Napoleon III Era (c.1850-70s) Kingwood Writer's Slope, 13.75" Box, Chest, Double Inkwell

Not really 'boulle', but rich with intricate and opulent inlays, brass and mother of pearl, the primary exotic wood veneers used is Kingwood, the strong straight grain and tones beautifully enhanced with the inlays, the heavy brass pencil edging trim and the blackened wood accents. Large at almost 14" long, it comes through the 150 or so years since creation in superb form. Lift-top and hinged-forward style, it creates a storage chest for stationery, pens, etc., but also an angled writing surface - often called a lap desk. Full measurements noted on the photos. Very good to excellent condition throughout, including the original pair of brass-capped glass inkwells and the pen tray cover. Hardware and chest of such high quality, one expects an engraved lock plate declaring it a TAHAN, Vervelle, P. Sormani - one of the top makers of 19th century items like this.
