Fine Antique French Palais Royal Travel Necessaire, Trousse de Voyage, Vanity Chest by L. Dugat, Sterling Silver
"Maison Smal L. DUJAT, Palais Royal 7 & 8" engraved on the lock plate, and the French control marks for finest French Sterling silver simply underscore the elegance of this 19th century traveler's chest. Surprisingly petit, really, it is large on traveler's necessities within. Dugat was supplier to the Emperor, Napoleon III (c.1850-70). All of the original jars, bottles, boxes remain along with an original inkwell, mirror and wood-handled brush. All have the same decorative monogram engraved as does the cartouche up top, "L M". The chest looks like rosewood to me - a beautiful grain enhanced by the heavy brass edging and lighter stringing. Complete with working lock and the original key, this one is really quite perfect, given an age of 150 years (give or take a decade). Full measurements noted on our photos. Very good to excellent condition for age and type. All of the original "L M" monogrammed and engraved lids remain with the set, one being an inkwell, leather-clad and pushbutt
