Fine Crown Monogram Silk Embroidery and Antique Ivory Carte de Visite Photo Case, c.1860s
A crown monogram in silk on silk embroidery, perhaps from a Royal handkerchief, and it's been kept perfectly pristine inside the most elegant carved ivory etui, case, probably initially made to display carte de visite photo, or even tintype, c.1850-70, Napoleon III era. I found this in France about 20 years ago, and love the delicate nature of it, the pristine condition and the smooth weight of it in hand. Time to downsize my collections. Full measurements noted on the photos, but is 3 1/4" x 2 3/8" x 1/2". Very good to excellent condition throughout. Double aperture etui, case for photos or perhaps portrait miniature, and on one side, perfectly kept, is the elaborate monogram in silk embroidery on silk, a crown worked into the monogram. In France, one cannot incorporate a crown into anything unless made for a Royal, crowned Noble. Heavy as only ivory is, super-smooth in the hand. A pushbutton closure and fine hinge both working perfectly. Note how smoothly it closes - there is not a
