RARE Antique Palais Royal French Sewing Box, 18k Gold, Mother of Pearl Tools, Emeralds, c.1800
One of the finest we've had, this c.1800-1810 French Empire Palais Royal sewing chest filled with the original sewing tools in carved mother of pearl, trimmed in 18k gold, including the medallions on scissor handles which are figural and set with tiny emeralds. I've only rarely ever seen a set jeweled in this manner. Nor is it usual to include crochet tambours or tatting shuttle as this set does. There are 2 tambours, each neatly close into themselves and are complete. The tatting shuttle is a navette-shaped item there to the front, and is a lace/crochet-like needlework tool rare to find in these sets. There are 4 silk winders, 3 original stars and one replacement (snowflake). Stiletto, bodkin and needle case complete the set. The thimble is solid 18k gold. All in their perfectly fitted original tray and box. Additionally, box still has working lock and original key. A museum quality set. Given time, one could perhaps find a 4th star. The old original mirror remains in place, as well.
