Stunning 15" Tall Antique French 2nd Empire Picture Frame, Figural and Griffen Gryphon Appliqués
My favorite type of Antique French frame, and this one is not only huge, but magnificent, fine condition, rare appliqués. It is in the manner of Napoleon's French Empire, but it would be from c.1850-70, Napoleon III revival, or 2nd Empire. It's rare, indeed, to find one of these superb old ones in such fine condition, the leather clad backing and easel stand entirely there and without deterioration or loss, the beautiful old wood in such nice form, and all trim and appliqués complete and in place. Notice the figures up top, a pair of dragons, or griffen, gryphon, drink from a fountain. These winged mythical figures are so rare to find and this appliqué is particularly elegant in form and craft. The frame has its glass, and an inner mat with a brass edging. The green panel is just a piece of wonderful old French silk fabric, looks quilted 'til you see the backside. Even that is lovely! All measurements are noted on the photos.
