This is an extremely iconic Murakami work that focuses on two of his most recognizable motifs and stylistic elements; Skulls & Flowers: smiling flowers and skulls, both of which initially appeared in his works in the 1990s. In this work, Murakami has placed an overlapping field of joyful faces capped with a halo of floral petals against an all-over field of anime-inspired skulls. Several dialectically interwoven couples give rise to variable constellations: abstraction and embodiment, figure and pattern, rhythm and substance, form and matter, stylization and naturalism.
