The protagonist of this youth novel is ten-year-old Piper Berry who lives on Buttermilk Hill in the North Carolina mountains. She is confronted with the likelihood that her parents are going to get divorced.  Ruth White (1942-2017) was born and raised in Whitewood, in Buchannan County - the Virginia county that adjoins both West Virginia and Kentucky.
