I am proud that this book won an American Book Award, but even more proud that it was the first publication for my co-editor, Jeff Biggers who has gone on to publish several more very important books once he got broke in, including The United States of Appalachia: How Southern Mountaineers Brought Independence, Culture, and Enlightenment to America (2005) and Resistance: Reclaiming an American Tradition (2018).
