Doris Ulmann (1882-1934) was a pioneer photographer of the people of the southern mountains. Sometimes accompanied by John Jacob Niles, the young ballad collector who offers an introduction to this book, she sought out the most soulful mountaineers. She urged them to dress old-fashioned and pictured them at sites she considered most indicative of a long-standing way of life.
