Mending our textiles centers the art of repair and reuse.Across continents and cultures, many traditions embrace visible mending, but the geometric patterns of sashiko remain especially recognizable. In this Intro to Sashiko class, we’ll explore those iconic shapes while sharing tips for achieving clean, even running stitches. We’ll provide sashiko thread, fabric scraps, and needles—but if you already have a favorite needle, feel free to bring it! As a thank-you for reusing what you have, you’ll receive an extra skein of sashiko thread. In this beginner class, you’ll learn how to create your own designs and start bringing them to life. Since the design stage takes time, we’ll work on a sampler in class and try out different patterns you can later use on projects at home. If you want to mend something in class, we recommend our Intro to Visible Mending class—there, you can skip the design process and get straight to mending with the aid of an instructor.
