The composition places the viewer within a slightly cloudy night, with three people shown on board of one on the sailboats. Using the technique of chiaroscuro, the dark purple and reddish tones contrast against the lighter gray and yellowish tones, showing the reflection of the moonlight over the water and creating slightly narrow tonal ranges, resulting in an ethereal and powerful image. The beautiful gilded frame is dated from the same period. Charles Emerson Brown (b. 1869) is an artist best known for his seascapes.
