After the outbreak of hostilities in eastern Ukraine, the Ukrainian Air Force began modernizing its aircraft fleet. One major step was the introduction of a gray digital camouflage scheme, developed as an alternative to Soviet-era patterns and fundamentally different from Russian and other post-Soviet designs. The first aircraft to receive the new camouflage was the MiG-29, during overhaul and modernization at the Lviv State Aircraft Repair Plant.
