Born and raised in São Paulo, Brazil to South Korean parents, Re Jin Lee now makes her ceramic pieces by hand in upstate New York, using a contemplative hand-and-clay process and harnessing a belief in simplicity. "It’s fitting that pottery dates back to the beginning of our existence," she says.   "Though I’m creating these large complicated sculptural pieces, I aspire to re-create the most basic, simplest, necessarily functional piece from the first time pottery was created." This sculpture is created from individually rolled out slabs, carefully slow dried to a bone-dry state, then finished with multiple layers of brushed-on slip on the surface, and glazed inside. One of a kind, and one of our absolute favorites. An intricate assembly of shape and form, this silhouette is dynamic with a strong sense of character. It is functional art—to be used as a side table or pedestal. Minor flaking may occur due to the nature of the material.
