Fortune's Double Yellow, Rosa chinensis, Antique Rose Flower Essence
Fortune's Double Yellow calms excessive desires. It reminds us we live in abundance. The subtle emotions soothe those separated from loved ones and an aching heart. Robert Fortune, a Scottish botanist, hi-jacked Double Yellow from China in 1845. It was blooming in China for centuries, known as Wang-Jang ye, yellow rose. The flowers are double apricot and yellow with red outer petals, 3 inches long with a sweet violet aroma, called the gold of Ophir. They remind me of peaches. The canes climb like a rambler, 10 feet x 13 feet. This rose is not cold hardy; therefore, Fortune was unable to grow it in Britain. Cuttings were taken to the USA, where it thrives in southern climates. It produces orange rose hips in the fall. Our Double Yellows survived a deep freeze of 0 degrees for a week with snow, sleet and hail recently. New canes came up from the ground and it continues to bloom. We trimmed the rose lightly after this deep freeze. Double yellow is one of the hardiest roses I have grown. A
