Gran Cocle Gold Pectoral Disc
Panama Circa 500 to 1550 AD Hammered and beaten to a slightly convex circular shape, the perimeter decorated with two rows of beadwork; pierced two times for suspension. The disc was worn as a breast jewelry as a high status symbol. Dimension: Size 11cm Diam.; 4-1/2 inches Diam; weight 24g. XRF elemental analysis shows a composition that is consistent with Pre-Columbian metallurgy:Gold (Au): 93.86 ± 0.09%Silver (Ag): 4.26 ± 0.06%Copper (Cu): 1.67 ± 0.06%Iron (Fe): 0.21 ± 0.07%This composition, particularly the gold-silver-copper ratio, is typical of Pre-Columbian gold artifacts. The high gold content (22.5K) and the presence of naturally occurring silver and copper is characteristic of Pre-Columbian metallurgical techniques. The absence of modern plating and the presence of small holes (likely for mounting or wearing) are consistent with Pre-Columbian manufacturing methods. The surface texture and patina also suggest ancient origin. Provenance: From the estate of Christian Illies (
