Narino Wax Resist Decorated Caryatid Vessel
Narino Complex, Highlands Colombia SA, Circa. 1250 AD. This production process is quite sophisticated for its time. The negative-resist decoration was achieved by applying wax or resin to specific areas of the pottery surface before adding pigments. This process worked similarly to modern painter's tape, allowing artisans to create precise patterns and designs. The technique produced earthen tones of black, tan, and red through a multi-step process. After the wax resist was applied, different pigments were added to create the characteristic geometric patterns and linear designs. This geometric banding is done this way and the seep bowls has three caryatid figures holding up the vessel at center; all attached to a rounded slab base. A very fine example for this type with excellent ancient archaeological patina. Size: 6 inches H. x 6-3/4 inches W.Ex Poway CA Collection of John Hart. Choice and rare.
