Edgar Alwin Payne - Southern California Hills 7.5" x 10"
Edgar Alwin Payne (1883-1947) Southern California Hills Pencil on paper Paper: 7.5” x 10”Frame: 15” x 17.25” Signed Lower Right: EDGAR PAYNE This landscape captures California hills in simple lines and minimal detail. Payne uses contour shading – straight, multi-directional lines used to depict depth – to capture details of the mountains and the surrounding landscape. Loose, undefined shapes represent rocks and trees. Payne was a respected plein-air landscape painter. This is likely a sketch he made and used to later paint the same scene in his studio. Provenance: The artist. Butterfield & Butterfield, Los Angeles, American and California Painting & Sculpture, December 10, 1997, Lot 3303 Private Collection, Bakersfield. Bonhams California, Coast to Coast: American Art, including The Collection of Gail Feingarten Oppenheimer, February 7, 2023, Lot 42 Private Collection, Utah
