An icon of Yosemite Valley. Yosemite in the mid to late 1800's was primarily under the control of the state of California.  The state's poor management and the popularity of the environmental conservationist John Muir eventually caused President Theodore Roosevelt to take back Yosemite National Park as federally protected land in an act of Congress in 1906.  The name Yosemite comes from Native American origin there was a tribe in the area named "Yosemite" that was annihilated by a California militia in 1851 soon afterward the name Yosemite began to be mean "killer."  Other Native American tribes used the word "Ahwahnee" meaning big mouth for the area.  The indgigenous people of the area were generally called "Yosemites" which comes from a Native American word "uzmate" meaning grizzly bear.  Grizzly bears were once common in the area and the hotel inside the park has kept the name Ahwahnee and has been known as the Ahwahnee Hotel since 1927. .: 100% Cotton fabric .: One side print .: O
