Keflavik #2

This is a painting from a series called "Desert Places" that I have been working on for the last two years. It is a semi-imaginary rendition of the first night I spent in Iceland several years ago. I remember being awed by the surreal colors of the sky at night, the landscape simultaneously alien and precise, minimalistic. To convey the atmosphere, I used a palette inspired by some of Bruegel's landscapes, as well as traditional Flemish oil painting techniques such as glazing and velatura.
