Born Fernando Martins de Bulhões in Lisbon, he joined the Augustinian order before switching to the Franciscans after encountering the martyrdom of five Franciscans in Morocco. Renaming himself Anthony, he became renowned for his powerful sermons, teaching, and ability to convert sinners. He was a gifted theologian and was known for his knowledge of Scripture. Saint Anthony was also known for his miracles, including healing the sick and helping the poor. He died at thirty-six and was canonized as a saint in 1232, just over a year after his death. He is the patron saint of lost items and is widely venerated, with his feast day celebrated on June 13. He
