Bearberry is often seen covering the ground in sandy areas. It is common on Cape Cod in open pine-studded areas. This trailing, ground-hugging, evergreen shrub has urn-shaped flowers that are white tinged with pink. It then produces bright red ¼ inch berries. Bears do eat the berries but so do birds and other wildlife. It is the larval host for several butterflies and moths and hummingbirds and bees visit the flowers.
