About Maksutov-Cassegrain Optics The Maksutov-Cassegrain, or MAK, is a catadioptric design that employs both lenses and mirrors. Light entering a MAK travels through a corrector lens, hits the primary mirror, bounces back to a spherical secondary mirror, and finally reaches the eyepiece. The resulting images are crisp, bright, and largely free from chromatic distortion. Unique to the MAK design are a few key features. Rather than having a separate secondary mirror, the MAK utilizes a "secondary spot," which is a reflective coating applied directly on the interior surface of the corrector plate. This eliminates the need for frequent collimation adjustments. Additionally, the secondary spot's smaller size contributes to the MAK's distinctively high-contrast visuals. However, it's worth noting that the Maksutov-Cassegrain design does come with a drawback: the more substantial Maksutov corrector plate takes longer to acclimate to the surrounding air temperature.
