The Story Behind This Icon: Saint Paul, whose name was Saul, was a Pharisee and a Jew who hunted and persecuted Christians for their faith. On one of his travels to Damascus in order to capture disciples of the Lord and bring them back to Jerusalem, he saw a bright light from the Heavens, and he heard a voice saying: "Saul, Saul, why persecutest thou Me?" Saul responded saying "Who art Thou, Lord?" and God replied, "I am Jesus Whom thou persecutest; it is hard for thee to kick against the pricks." After this interaction, Saul was blinded and was led into Damascus by the men traveling with him. Meanwhile, in Damascus, the Lord appeared to the Apostle Ananias and told him that he should baptize Saul. As the Lord had said, Saul came into Damascus and was baptized as Paul.
