Owen Roe Red Willow Vineyard 1973 Block Cabernet Sauvignon 2010
We just opened a bottle of 2010 Owen Roe Red Willow 1973 Block Cab for our friends from Houston. It is drinking so amazingly well that we have to tell you about it. The definition of smooth, there is no better drinking Cabernet we have to offer—total perfection in aged Washington Cab. The hard work of cellaring has been done for you. Now it's time for you to do the easy part and order some today! One of our Washington Cabernet of all-time bests, straight from the library of Owen Roe founder David O’Reilly. More impressive than we expected or imagined. The flavors still have a youthfulness to them, everything softened into beautiful maturity by the aging process. Deep, dark black cherries mixed with cassis, accented by cedar, caramel, and hints of purple flowers. Where it really got us all: its so, so suave, supple, smooth richness–that’s where time in the bottle has worked magic. There’s no better drinking Washington Cabernet that we have to offer. From a special block of old vines in Red Willow Vineyard, planted in 1973. Our original tasting note upon release: Sumptuous and silky textured, layers of blackberry and cassis explode in the mouth. Licorice, bittersweet cocoa, dried flowers, and a hint of eucalyptus adding depth and weight. A 30+ second finish of red plum and cherry, blackberry jam, and smoke adds to its power and breadth. A gorgeous wine, though a bit tightly wound, decant if drinking now. We suggest cellaring for 2-3 years before drinking, and holding for up to 15. 2011 vintage notesOwen Roe 1973 Block Red Willow Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon is outstanding, 100% Cabernet Sauvignon expressed in a classic, structured form. The 2011 shows the redder side of Cabernet, with base notes of ripe blackberries and accents of cedar, graphite, and sage. I recommend cellaring 3-4 years before diving into the first bottle. - Marcus
