The Kolbe Rosary was inspired by St. Maximillian Kolbe, whose feast day is August 14. Known to most for his heroic martyrdom during WWII at a Nazi concentration camp, St. Maximillian Kolbe was a fascinating, modern-day saint with a deep devotion to Our Lady and the rosary. A Franciscan, St. Maximillian established several monasteries during his lifetime (including one in Japan) as well as founded a spiritual "militia," titled "Militia Immaculata" or "Army of the Immaculate One." He also published a periodical titled "Knight of the Immaculate" promoting devotion to Our Lady. One of the more interesting stories associated with St. Maximillian, and the inspiration behind this rosary, was a vision he had where Our Lady presented him with two crowns: a white crown for purity and a red crown for martyrdom.
