19th century, or possibly earlier, seated bronze chimera, cast as a ferocious scaled beast seated in a defensive crouch with its head facing forward as it opens its mouth in a roar exposing the tongue, and the ears shown among backswept horns. The chimera seated on an integral base. A wonderful small sculpture that exudes a lot of presence. A very appealing warm, coppery patina. Guardian figures and mythical beasts, like the seated creature here, intended to safeguard the home, were often depicted with fierce features designed to intimidate. 8.75" h x 3.5" w x 4" d
