The 25 mile long range of mountains served as a stronghold for the tribes, providing protection and a vantage point to watch over the surrounding land. The legendary Apache leader Cochise and his band sought refuge here in the mid-19th century, leaving an indelible mark on the area's history. The Dragoon Mountains are closely entwined with the lore of the Old West. The Butterfield Overland Mail Trail, a stagecoach route, passed through the range in the mid-1800s, connecting St. Louis to San Francisco. Travelers faced the daunting challenge of traversing the rugged terrain and steep canyons. The mountains were, at times, a perilous backdrop for encounters with outlaws and indigenous tribes.
