299 CHIEF GARFIELD, Jicarilla Apache The Jicarillas occupy a reservation of nearly 450 square miles of mountainous country in northern New Mexico. Linguistically, of the same stock as the Apache of Arizona, but their dialect, mythology, legends and medicine rites more closely resemble those of the Navajo. In dress the Jicarilla resemble the Plains Indians with feather headdress, which is never worn by other southern or Western tribes. Photograph by Edward S. Curtis, 1904
