Landscape with flowers, fruits and two figures [English School, 18th century]

Oil on canvas.  Evidently a work in progress, heavily rubbed, in which the anonymous artist has used the canvas in three orientations, a landscape with trees and flowers developing from one side, a table with fruits along the opposite, and two portraits revealed beneath, one upright, the other upside down, seen together presently as in a composition somehow reminiscent of a playing card.  In fine condition.  24.75 x 30 inches (63 x 76 cm.).
