Coral Sea Naval Engagement Battle Map
The Battle of Coral Sea was fought from 4-8 May 1942 in the Coral Sea, northeast of Australia and south of the Solomon Islands. Coral Sea was the first naval battle in history where the two opposing forces never actually saw each other, but rather engaged using aircraft. It was a significant moment as the shift away from battleships and to carriers was now validated. At Coral Sea, the Japanese inflicted more damage (sunk Lexington and damaged Yorktown) but their drive south was checked (they also lost the light carrier Shoho). This map shows the movements of the major American ships involved at Coral Sea from start to finish, showing the locations of air attacks and sinkings.
