Guadalcanal and Solomon Islands Battle Map

The Battle for Guadalcanal was a series of engagements from August 1942 through February 1943. Guadalcanal was the first offensive for the Allies in the Pacific as they denied the Japanese the use of an airfield on the island (renamed Henderson Field after the Allies captured it) as the Japanese drove toward Australia. There were numerous land battles across the island as well as naval battles, which led to the waters off Guadalcanal to be nicknamed "Iron Bottom Sound" due to the numerous American and Japanese ships sunk there.
